19 - 23 August 2009

The Kalahari is one of those quite special places on this earth. Wide open expanses, dunes, grass and predators. If predators interest you, then the Kalahari is the place to see them. It hosts a veritable buffet of predators to see.
From Cape cobras, to Birds of prey and the ever-alert Meercats; to the largest cats in Africa, the Kalahari Black maned Lion - the Kalahari offers unprecedented viewing of these animals.
We have timed this trip in the winter months when predator viewing is at its best. Due to this being the dry season, there is often a lot of action around the waterholes and the dry dusty conditions are conducive to atmospheric scenes during the late afternoon hours. The cool crisp mornings allow for excellent photography, as the sun is still low on the horizon. This also means that the normal daytime hiding cats are a lot more active during these hours: and that means good opportunites for photographs.
However, this is not the only about predators. Birds are also more relaxed in the cool morning conditions and we can expect to photograph swallowtail bee eaters roosting together, owls and raptors sunning them selves in the morning sun and tiny pygmy falcons coming out of their torpor from the evening chill.
Based at Twee Rivieren campsite, near the joining of the Auob and Nossob Rivers, we will take morning and afternoon drives out in search of photographic subjects. During the day we will discuss and learn about camera techniques, post processing and presentation of images.
